Photo Project: Week 19

The theme for this week's photo is Spirals, compliments of Fifty-two Frames from FB. Since Tuesday, I was trying to figure out how to portray this theme without being too obvious. Some suggestions were taking shots of pasta swirls and spiral rings from a drawing or painting. I thought about capturing something from the city, but couldn't seem to find anything that suggested a spiral theme, unless I did some long exposure of light and then fused multiple frames together. Since I'm not too keen on Photoshop, I decided against the light idea.

Yesterday, I wore this necklace that had tiny spirals as part of its design. Then I figured, I might as well use the necklace as my subject. I battled with ideas of how to capture the spirals on the necklace for some hours. For example, I thought about draping it around my neck, or my hand and then have my hand somewhat offset against my face and so forth. Finally, I decided to simply have the necklace wrapped around a hand, with the hand simply positioned on a flat surface. My sister volunteered her hand and after a few takes, here's what I got.

I turned the lights off and used flash to add some interesting color to the frame, instead of just having it encased with fluorescent light. I played around with multiple angles of the overall frame, but finally decided that a full on take of her hand and the necklace was the best among the bunch. I absolutely love the little creases around the thumb and index parts of her hand. It sorta reminds me of dinosaurs, lol. I know some photographers would have probably smoothen out the skin, but I'm not one for those air-brushed looks.

All that said, I don't think the spiral theme is too obvious. It's only noticeable if you pay attention to where the focus of the frame is, which was entirely by design. That is, since the necklace had multiple spiral rings, I thought focusing on one, and having the remainder blurred would add some depth to the photo.

I'm not sure what next week's theme will be, but I'm sure it'll be another challenge trying to figure out how to capture a splendid shot. The again, most of photography is usually a mind battle :)
