Photo Project: Week 39

Happy 2014! Hope you had a wonderful time ringing in the new year :) Fifty-two Frames began the year with self portraits. Naturally, I was dreading this because self portraits are one of the hardest things to do in the photography world. Why you may ask? Well, it's where the photographer becomes the subject of the photo. Hence, you need to figure out your focus points since you are not behind the camera to determine such. Then you need to vary your facial expressions to create several looks to choose for editing when you're done. During all this, you've probably gotten frustrated with yourself because the photos do not mimic anything you imagined. I should know... I had one look in the mirror, but a completely different look on a camera! After 100 takes experimenting between three different concepts, I got about 20 frames I was pleased with. After editing half of that, I decided to use the least lit image because it caught my attention in an unexplainable way.

There's something about black on black photos that intrigue me. I wanted my self portrait to exude "reflections" without me having to say it. That said, I thought I'd share one of my favorite poems that seems quite fitting with the above image.

“All these things have you said of beauty.
Yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied,
And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.
It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.
It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears.
It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw,
But rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.
People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.
But you are life and you are the veil.
Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.
But you are eternity and your are the mirror.”
