Week 37 and what a fun theme it was! The theme from Fifty-two frames was "Out of Focus." One of the admins suggested "bokeh" effects. I've always wanted to try bokeh, but never got around to it. So I decided to do bokeh as my take on the "out of focus" theme. I did some research to discern how to do different patterns for bokeh as I didn't want the regular circles to serve as my background. After experimenting with several shapes, I decided to use the shot that featured floating bunnies from a jar.

The lit shapes were actually supposed to be those of a cat. However, the cut-out was not as accurate as it needed to be. Hence the bunny-like shapes in the photo. Maybe I'd need to have the cat laser-cut in order for the shape to be perfect? Here's the shape of the cat that I tried to recreate via bokeh. First I cut a piece of black construction paper the size of the lens. Then, I simply traced the cat silhouette unto the paper. Thereafter, I used an xacto knife to cut the traced figure out of the paper.

Then, I removed the traced pieces, and placed the paper unto the camera lens. To create the effect, I hung a string of lights against a black backdrop. For a point of focus, I placed a mason jar a few feet infront of the backdrop with the lights. Finally, I focused the lens on the mason jar. The backlight automatically morphed into the silhouette I cut from the construction paper. I created several designs, but only a few worked to my liking. Maybe I need to improve on my cutting skills :) Here's a few more photos I took over the course of the night.
